These two fads are known to be the healthiest and best way to get your wealth of greens every day. Now, in this, it has ensued into what some may have called the biggest nutritional debate in history: what is better green smoothies or green juicing?
By the end of this article, you will know exactly which is better for you and why. What are you waiting for, let’s go!
What is the Difference Between Green Smoothies and Juices?
Before we can even talk about which healthy beverage is better for you between green smoothies and green juices, it’s important to understand the differences between them.
For many, many people, they all think smoothies and juices are the same. To their surprise, green smoothies and green juices are gravely different.
Green smoothies are created through a process known as blending. Blending fruits and vegetables creates a very different result not just in the texture of the drink, but also nutritionally.
Blending is simply the art of taking whole fruits or vegetables and blending it all together to create a smoothie. Through the process, no nutrients are lost and the fiber is kept.
There are a few other notable things about a smoothie that makes it unique. For one, a smoothie does not oxidize quickly, making it easier for an individual to consume and retain the nutrients of the fruit and vegetables.
In another case, an individual CAN make a juice that contains pulp with a high-quality blender. As you will learn juicers are quite different.
Many people tend to think that juicing is the same as blending fruits and veggies. Juicing is the art of taking fruits and vegetables and actually extracting all of the juice and liquid that is within the fruits or vegetables.
This is done through a machine specifically created for juicing purposes. After the fruits and vegetables have been juiced, the fiber is removed and thrown away.
With that being said, it’s important to know that individuals much drink juices faster than a smoothie.
Reason being, these healthy green beverages oxidize much faster, making it harder to get the wealth of nutrients from a juice. On top of this, unlike a blender, a juicer cannot be used to create a thick smoothie.
Which is Better: Green Smoothies or Green Juices?
This is the moment we all have been waiting for: which is better green smoothies or green juices? Today, many nutritionally gurus are still debating this very question; however, we challenge you to take a look back and weigh the benefits.
While there is no concrete evidence or scientifically study proving either side of the case, the truth is, it has been said that green smoothies are much better than juicing for multiple reasons.
Why? Well, take a look at these reasons:
- Whole Food Nutrition
When you are creating a juice with a juicing machine, you are not necessarily getting whole food nutrition. In fact, when you are juicing, you extract the fiber and any other nutrients that come with that.
This is quite the contrary for when you decide to create a smoothie. A green smoothie is simply taking whole vegetables and capturing all of their fiber and nutrients. As you will learn for the second reason, fiber is a crucial part of our diet.
As we discussed in the first reason, juices are beverages with the fiber and nutrients removed from the drink. Now, did you know that fiber is an essential nutrient for proper digestive function and your heath?
Not only this but fiber helps with slowing down your body’s ability to absorb sugar. In juices, the drink is missing this essential part; therefore, it causes the human body to absorb an abnormal amount of sugar.
Another extremely important reason why smoothies are considerably better for you than juices is due to this process known as oxidation. We briefly talked about it earlier; however, let’s be a little clearer.
Whenever you juice, it’s recommended to drink the juice as fast as possible since juices are subject to oxidation faster than smoothies. Reason being, juices are processed much differently than a smoothie.
So, you might be wondering, “Great, what does this mean?” Well, when a juice oxidizes or a smoothie, they lose the majority of their nutrients. Since a smoothie takes significantly longer to oxidize, it gives you more time to drink it and soak up those delicious fruits and veggies!
Green Juices ARE Healthy
We would like to take a minute before anyone begins jumping to any more conclusions. Just because a smoothie may be healthier given the reasons above, it does not make green juices unhealthy.
Green juices are still one of the HEALTHIEST sources and drinks available today. I mean, think about it! In comparison to all of the junk food available, a green juice is significantly healthier than anything out there.
What we suggest is to balance your diet with a wealth of smoothies AND juices. Why pick one if you can have both?
